Residential sprinkler qualification launched in response to Hackitt Report passes first cohort

A residential sprinkler qualification – launched in response to the Hackitt Report – has successfully been passed by its first cohort.

The Residential Sprinkler Association and SFJ Awards developed the Level 2 Certificate in Fire Sprinkler Installation (Domestic and Residential) to align professional learning with legislative updates introduced by government in recent years.

Chair of the Residential Sprinkler Association Dean Price says that the qualification is an important milestone for the sector, which will help to professionalise installations and improve standards in the months and years to come.

“The residential sprinkler market has experienced significant growth in the past decade or so, with regulation failing to keep pace until relatively recently.

“In light of the Hackitt Report’s call for greater industry-wide training, the qualification was designed by subject matter experts from the residential sector to ensure a higher standard of domestic installations.

“Now that a first cohort of learners have this qualification under their belts, the sector has a platform to build from in terms of upskilling the workforce to better protect our communities, families and homes.”

The Residential Sprinkler Association represents 60 members across the UK and champions the development of the residential sector through providing advocacy, training and technical guidance and support.

The association partnered with Ofqual-regulated awarding body SFJ Awards to design and deliver the qualification. David Higham is Managing Director of the not-for-profit fire and rescue qualifications specialists. He comments:

“It’s fundamentally important that those installing residential sprinklers have undergone specialist training that is backed up by a recognised qualification.

“Changes in the regulatory environment are an opportunity to professionalise and raise standards, and the qualification has undergone a rigorous accreditation process to ensure that it is aligned with government guidelines.

“We are proud to have played our part in developing this qualification, which represents a significant step forward in terms of minimising fire risk in domestic and residential settings.”

The Level 2 Certificate in Fire Sprinkler Installation is designed to equip individuals with the necessary competencies to demonstrate proficiency in both domestic and residential on-site sprinkler installation.
