Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service is urging people who vape to take extra care when charging their devices, as the UK prepares to ban the sale and supply of single use vapes from 1 June 2025.
The ban on vapes may mean that more vape users switch to rechargeable devices and the Service is highlighting the increased fire risks associated with charging lithium-ion batteries.
Emma Roberts, Head of Prevention at HWFRS, said:
“In Herefordshire and Worcestershire in the five-year period between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2024, 40 accidental fires were caused by lithium I-on batteries. This highlights the importance of charging batteries in a safe way. It is crucial to use the battery and charger that came with your vape and if you need a replacement, always buy from a reputable source.”
