Andrew F Phillips Installed as Master of the Worshipful Company of Firefighters (2025–2026)

Andrew F Phillips JP was formally installed as Master of the Worshipful Company of Firefighters on Friday 4 July 2025, at St Mary-le-Bow Church, Cheapside, following his confirmation at the Election Court held at historic Coopers’ Hall in the City of London on 20 June.

The installation ceremony was followed by a moving Service of Rededication and a celebratory luncheon. In attendance were Liverymen and Freemen of the WCoFF, members of other Livery Companies from across the City of London, and Andrew’s family and friends — all offering their warm congratulations and best wishes.  The moment held deep significance beyond tradition. Andrew’s appointment as Master stands as a visible commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) within the Livery movement. His leadership reflects the evolving face of the City and sends a powerful message about belonging, representation, and the future of service in London’s historic institutions.

A respected leader and lifelong public servant, Andrew brings decades of experience in emergency services, civic duty, and mentorship. Born in Georgetown, then British Guyana, and arriving in the UK in 1979, he rose through the ranks of the London Fire Brigade to become Assistant Divisional Officer. He served at major incidents including the Kings Cross Fire, the Marchioness disaster, and the 7/7 Bombings, earning multiple service medals and the RSPCA Bronze Medal for a heroic rescue of five horses from a burning stable.

Beyond operational response, Andrew helped develop the Uganda Fire Service and led pan-London Home Fire Safety initiatives. Equally dedicated to the development of others, he has mentored numerous younger officers throughout his career, many of whom have gone on to lead in their own right.

Andrew joined the Worshipful Company of Firefighters in 2011, became a Liveryman in 2013, and joined the Court of Assistants in 2015. He has chaired the Events Committee and led key initiatives including the Fire Industry Charity Ball. His term as Master will focus on inclusion, continuity, and purposeful engagement across the Livery.

In his own words:
“This is an honour, a privilege, and a duty. As a former fire officer, this appointment carries deep personal meaning. I accept the office of Master with humility and a strong commitment to serve our Company and the wider Livery with purpose and integrity.”

Outside of the Company, Andrew has served as a Justice of the Peace for nearly 15 years, regularly sitting in Crown Court appeal hearings.

A multi-talented sportsman, he has achieved success in athletics and rugby, and currently represents the Essex Seniors in cricket. He also coaches with the Essex (Falcons) Ability team and earlier in life held a British Gliding Association Gliding Certificate and Solo Endorsement — reflecting his lifelong pursuit of discipline, challenge, and growth.

Andrew is a devoted father to two daughters and partner to Diane. He enjoys walking the countryside, cooking for loved ones, and upholding the values that have shaped both his career and character: service, fellowship, harmony, and honour.
