Antarctic Fire Angels Complete Another Huge Challenge

On the back of their triumphant expedition to the South Pole last year, the Antarctic Fire Angels duo have now successfully completed 7 marathons in 7 consecutive days wearing full firefighting kit and breathing apparatus sets.

Bex and George – otherwise known as the Antarctic Fire Angels (AFA), are no strangers to ground breaking challenges as earlier this year they completed an extraordinary Antarctic expedition. This involved them trekking over 1,200km in 52 days, from the coast of the Antarctica to the South Pole – the equivalent of 29 marathons. They were the first people ever to complete their chosen route and their expedition was entirely unguided and unassisted, whilst pulling their own supply and equipment sleds – each weighing over 100kg.

For their most recent challenge, Firefighter Rebecca Openshaw-Rowe of Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service travelled across 7 continents – in what’s known as The Great World Race. Her AFA partner Firefighter Georgina Gilbert of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service completed her 7 marathons in 7 counties of the UK.

Speaking about the most recent challenge, Firefighter Rebecca Openshaw-Rowe of Port Talbot Fire Station, said:

“It is so important for us to be visible as female firefighters and to continue to help change the narrative of what it means to be a girl.

The Great World Race gives us an opportunity to take our message across the world.”

Rebecca and Georgina are fantastic role models for women and girls to pursue a career in whichever field they choose and have provided advice and support to women undergoing the firefighter recruitment process.

Everyone at Mid and West Fire and Rescue Service congratulates Rebecca and Georgina on their incredible achievements.
