Nominees announced for the Global Search & Rescue Excellence Awards

FIRE magazine and publisher Fire Knowledge, in partnership with the Institute of Search and Technical Rescue, is pleased to announce the shortlist for the inaugural international awards taking place on May 16th

The Global Search & Rescue Excellence Awards recognises and celebrates the achievements of search and rescue teams, volunteers, organisations and suppliers who work so tirelessly to respond in times of need. The event celebrates those from around the world who have shown unstinting dedication to the search and rescue community and for teams and individuals who have really made a difference.

Nominees come from around the world – including the US, Germany, Austria, South Africa, China and the Middle East – hailing from a range of search and rescue disciplines including urban, sea, helicopter and cave rescue responding to global disasters such as the Turkey/Syria earthquake and the flooding across Europe and Malawi.

Recognising the outstanding contribution of individuals, teams and organisations to the invaluable role played by those on the frontline, the Global Search & Rescue Excellence Awards shines a spotlight on the unsung heroes responding to disasters and emergencies around the world.

To be held on May 16th at One Great George Street, Westminster, the Global Search & Rescue Excellence Awards is supported by the Institute of Search and Technical Rescue and will highlight the best in global response and celebrate frontline responders and those working tirelessly behind the scenes to improve disaster response and save lives.

David O’Neill MBE, President of the Institute of Search and Technical Rescue, said: “From our own experience, we know that the activities of search and technical rescue are often undertaken through a selfless devotion to duty. Those choosing to work or volunteer in these activities do so for the good of others and rarely seek recognition for their actions. Therefore holding an event that recognises the outstanding contribution of individuals, teams and organisations, who often risk their own lives and comforts for the good of others is invaluable and one in which we are delighted to be a partner.”

FIRE Editor Andrew Ledgerton-Lynch OBE said: “I am delighted to introduce the first Global Search & Rescue Excellence Awards which I am sure will be an exciting and memorable celebration of fire and rescue personnel and supporters from around the world. From our experience of the Excellence in Fire & Emergency Awards – this year celebrating its tenth edition – we know that shining a spotlight on personnel is the best way to recognise everyday unsung heroes, share best practice and promote innovation and collaboration.”

Speaking on behalf of headline sponsor Frequentis UK, David King said: “Frequentis specialise in providing critical communications solutions to support the activities of police, fire, ambulance, maritime and defence organisations around the world. These organisations are synonymous with search and rescue, and therefore when there was an opportunity to sponsor the Global Search & Rescue Excellence Awards, we jumped at the chance to show support and recognition for the people and organisations that undertake these extremely important activities, often as volunteers.”
