Fire Service appoints new Deputy Chief Fire Officer

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) has appointed Jim McNeil as their new Deputy Chief Fire Officer (DCFO).

Chief Fire Officer Graeme Binning stated: “I am delighted that Jim has been successful in securing the role of Deputy Chief Fire Officer. His professionalism, passion, and energy which he demonstrates every day make him a key asset to our service.  Jim has been with us for two and a half years and during this time has demonstrated a unique ability to nurture people and improve the service that NFRS provides to the communities of Northumberland. I am looking forward to our next chapter.”

Jim brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience, having served for nearly 25 years with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, and the last two and a half years as our Assistant Chief Fire Officer in Northumberland.

Jim supported the service during the recent HMICFRS inspection, which saw NFRS continue to make vast improvements since its previous inspection in 2021.

Commenting on his appointment, Jim said: “I am truly honoured with my appointment to the DCFO role. I relish the opportunity to work closely with my Chief Fire Officer and all our wonderful staff to deliver our vision of making Northumberland safer.  As a modern and improving Fire Service, we will continue to work in collaboration with Northumberland County Council to ensure those who work, live, or visit this beautiful county continue to be safe.”

Councillor Gordon Stewart, Fire Authority Chair, added: “I am delighted that Jim will be the next DCFO of Northumberland – he is an excellent appointment for us.

Jim brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience and will also lead the country’s wildfire response by recently taking the mantle of National Wildfire Strategic Lead for the National Fire Chiefs’ Council.

Jim credits his family for his drive, adding: “Without the love and unwavering support of my wife, Fiona, two children, Keri and Shannon, and my beautiful grand-daughter Arya, I could not have got to where I am today as our new Deputy Chief Fire Officer.

“Their constant love has been the driving force behind my success, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank them all for being my greatest champions.”
